|
|
I've been struggling to find a solution for my problem. I have an internal wireless card on my IBM Thinkpad T30. lspci reports that it's an Intersil Prism 2.5, but the kernel uses orinoco drivers, and it works fine. Excpet now I want to use kismet, and the current orinoco drivers (0.13e) do not support monitoring mode. One alternative I thought of was to use wlan-ng drivers instead of the compiled-in kernel drivers I'm currently using. Okay. So I emerge linux-wlan-ng, and it makes a few modules visible in /lib/modules/2.6.11-gentoo-r4 (gentoo-sources). However, one of the modules it wants to load, prism2_pci, refuses to load. I've tried everything I can think of. I'm starting to realize I have no idea how wlan-ng relates to my kernel config, for example...
1. Do I still have to compile-in drivers for my wireless chipset? Should I not do anything in the kernel with wireless(no modules or compiled-in drivers?)
2. What do I have to do besides emergin linux-wlan-ng and putting those modules into /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6?
3. WTF why won't prism2_pci load? when I try to, it tells me
Code: | modprobe prism2_pci
FATAL: Error inserting prism2_pci (/lib/modules/2.6.11-gentoo-r4/linux-wlan-ng/prism2_pci.ko): No such device

I'm at a loss here. According to the kismet site, as of version 0.15 (which is super alpha right now), monitoring support will be included. But I don't want to wait a year for the driver to catch up with what I want to do! Any help in the matter will be greatly appreciated.

Solved by taking out all the kernel config for Hermes II chipsets and simply emerging orinoco. Then I added the modules to moduls.autoload.d, and voila. Monitoring on my shitty Intersil Prism 2.5. Big thanks go out to the gentoo-notebook irc channel! _________________ IBM Thinkpad T30 2366-FBU
