I'm completely new to Linux and to Gentoo so maybe I want too much. Hopefully someone can help me.

I'm trying to install Gentoo on a PIII machine. This worked just fine even when I had to modprobe for my networkcards (something very scary for a noob like me  ), but then (Step 4 of the install handbook) it went wrong.

From my work I got a Raid controller and some disks so I thought it would be nice to use this in the internetserver (what this machine is going to be). The standard Livecd doesn't recognize the controller though even with the -doscsi option.

I thought it would be possible to modprobe my way trough this, but it couldn't find anything so please could somebody help me with this?[/code]

You did not say which make and model your RAID controller was.

I'm sorry. It's a dac960. I heard on another forum (GOT) that I could use i2o drivers. Can I just modprobe them. Are there any other possibilities to make it work. It's a nice piece of hardware equipment, but if I can't use it :)

You can find the DAC960 driver in the kernel 2.6.x configuration under device drivers --> block devices. If you compiled it as a module, you can install it with modprobe. If you wish to boot from the RAID however, you might prefer to compile it into the kernel proper.

I would like to boot from it. And I'm a huge noob so I've never compiled anything on Linux. How do I do this? Is it possible with the Live disk?
Unfortunately the RAID is the only harddisk in my system due to to little molex plugs.

Oops, of course. Kernel compilation is described in the Installation Handbook, but you first need the system on the Live CD to recognize your hard disk. Hopefully the DAC960 module exists on your Live CD. Try "modprobe DAC960" after booting from it.

I don't blame you. Everything seems much easier if you know what you are doing :) .
The lifecd doesn't recognize the controller and modprobe dac960 doesn't work. That is the main problem.
I read somewhere you have to recompile the kernel to support the controller. The guy from this article seems to have support. How did he do that? Maybe I should try to find his mail.

Hmm, I think the person from that article is installing from an already set up Gentoo installation, so I don't think that'll help you much. Shot in the dark here, but does it work if you boot up the livecd with the smp kernel instead of the default?

I will try tonight when I'm back home. I'm in the office right now (sst. Don't tell anybody I'm on this forum ;)), so I can't reach our future internet server. Maybe I should just give up and trade the Raidcontroller for a decent ATA disk. But then again....RAID 5 does rule. TNX for the tips you gave me.

What exactly is the error message of "modprobe DAC960"? If the module is not available, I can build one for your kernel which you can modprobe from a floppy disk or CD. To do this, I need to know what "uname -a" says on your system after booting from the Live CD.

SHIT!!! (can I say that here. If not I'm sorry)
I typed modprobe dac960 and it should be modprobe DAC960. Casesensitivity is a little getting used to... I'm sorry and realy ashamed.

Now he gives an error while loading the module (didn't give any options on the commandline):

Code:
DAC960#0: FIRMWARE VERSION VERIFICATION FAILED - DETACHING

And then there is a stack and a calltrace. If you need to see that I will type it, but for now I typed enough :)

Gonna try updating the firmware now.
