Hi, got some problems getting my nvidia video card to run, so I thought I wouldn't be the only one with this probleme.
emerging nvidia-glx did not work, since I came from XF86 to Xorg
Code: |
# emerge -pv nvidia-glx
These are the packages that I would merge, in order:
Calculating dependencies ...done!
[blocks B ] x11-base/xorg-x11 ("virtual/x11" from pkg x11-base/xfree-4.3.0-r5)
[blocks B ] x11-base/xorg-x11 (from pkg x11-base/xfree-4.3.0-r5)
[ebuild UD] media-video/nvidia-kernel-1.0.4496-r3 [1.0.5336-r3] 0 kB
[ebuild N ] x11-base/xfree-4.3.0-r5 -3dfx -3dnow -bindist +cjk -debug -doc -ipv6 -mmx +nls +pam -sdk -sse -static +truetype +xml2 16,984 kB
[ebuild N ] media-video/nvidia-glx-1.0.4496 0 kB
Total size of downloads: 16,984 kB

But that seems to be alright, so I emerged nvidia-kernel... without problemes.
Now I changed the value "nv" to "nvidia" in my xorg.conf like the howto says, here is a part of my xorg.conf:
Code: |
Section "Device"
Identifier "NVIDIA GeForce 4 Ti 4200"
Driver "nv"
#Driver "nvidia"
#VideoRam 131072
# Insert Clocks lines here if appropriate
Option "NvAGP" "1"
EndSection
|
so here I changed nv to nvidia, after that I modprobed nvidia and addicted it to the modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6
Works fine until now, here my probleme:
When I use "opengl-update" it always shows me the help, no matter if the parameter is "nvidia" or "LALALA", without parameter its showing the help to. The only thing working is "opengl-update xorg-x11" so that's what I did... if I try to start X now, the "module nvidia could not be found", if I change the value in xorg.conf back to nv, X works fine again...
I can kinda SMELL that there are thousands of people with the same probleme as me, but I can't find any thread about that topic T-T
so thx in advance @ all _________________ What do you have when you have six lawyers buried up to their necks in sand? Not enough sand.

you need to merge nvidia-glx. this is required and does work with X.org. what problem did you have installing it? _________________ http://dev.gentoo.org/~dsd |

as you can see from my emerge -pv nvidia-glx, those packages from xorg seem to block the ones that would be emerged by emerging nvidia-glx.. the probleme here is that I didn't emerge nvidia-glx since my change to xorg, cause those packages from xorg block them... don't really wanna try to get rid of this packages..but should I? _________________ What do you have when you have six lawyers buried up to their necks in sand? you should be trying to merge version 1.0.5336 of nvidia-glx, so that it matches your nvidia-kernel. if the blocking problems still do not go away, merge with --nodeps. _________________ http://dev.gentoo.org/~dsd |

Now everythings fine (nearly..) thx to you, --nodeps worked for me
So opengl_update works and this thread can be closed
My new probleme is the black screen on starting X with the nvidia driver (not nv by xorg), seems to be a problem with nforce2, no idea how to fix this, already tried a lot of stuff wich seemed to work for some people _________________ What do you have when you have six lawyers buried up to their necks in sand?
