Hi,

I'm trying to update my kernel (a 2.6.4-gentoo-r1) to 2.6.5 or 2.6.6 but the system freeze on boot after detecting ide/sata devices.
In /var/log/messages the line after the freeze is "libata version 1.01 loaded."

I don't have any logs when trying booting with kernel > 2.6.4.

I've tried several thing before coming here, the gentoo-dev-sources (2.6.5-r1) the 2.6.5 from kernel.org (without any patchs) the 2.6.6 without any patchs too, and with several libata patchs ...
I've used "make oldconfig" to change my 2.6.3 to 2.6.4, there is no problem, I do the same to change my 2.6.4 to 2.6.5 and it crash.

I don't understand at all :(

My cpu is an Athlon XP 1600+ with SATA disk only on a via chipset (VIA VT6420), but I'd the same problem on my P4M on my portable (with Intel I810 chipset - ide only), but I solved the problem on it (using genkernel with defaut options, but without initrd, I don't like it).

I can boot with > 2.6.4 if I use genkernel to make config (all default - without again initrd) but now it use a modified by myself .config. I've tried to remove .config and .config.old, remove genkernel, but when I re-emerge genkernel it use again my own .config (and I don't where it come from oO).

So if anybody know how to make genkernel don't use my .config but a completly new, I can try to make it work with default options and remove the option I don't really need after.
Or if anybody know wich option I forget to make it boot normally, it was great :)

Like you I don't know really where I must begin to explain, so ask me for more informations, I'll give with pleasure ;)

Thanks for your time,

mathias

Hi,

I've finaly found the solution, those kernel hang when I configure both IDE driver and SATA driver, if I use only SATA driver it's ok. I haven't take time to test with ide driver in module.

Regards,
mathias
