AMD AthlonXP or Athlon64 (64's with Gentoo = Goodness.)
At the very least 512MB DDR400.
ASUS Mobo (A7N8X-E or K8V). If you get one with an nForce chipset, make sure you get two sticks of RAM instead. E.g: 256+256 = 512. This way you can throw it into Dual-Channel mode and get ~30% more performance. Good for compiling and gaming especially.
nVidia GeForceFX 5600 (or higher) - basically a no-brainer these days for Linux. ATI's drivers are shoddy and horrible, whilst nVidia's drivers are beyond excellent.
SoundBlaster LIVE! or Audigy - ALSA's support for these cards is excellent.
Western Digital Hard Drives. (160GB ones these days are pretty cheap...)
LG DVD+-RW (You may have to tussle a bit to get this beast working, but once you do, it works great. Hint: SCSI emulation.)
400W+ PSU. You should never use anything under 400W for an Athlon.
Generic Floppy. Anything will do.

With a system like that, you'll be crusing for at least another two or three years.

I'd really love to get all that stuff, but I cant afford it:( AMD 64 looks so cool though.

Now I'm worried about my Asus nForce2 motherboard:(

Most ideal? I don't expect it's any use to you, but I'd say an IBM pSeries. >>
