What sort of computer would you say is the best(Most stable, compatible, efficient, etc) to run Gentoo Linux on?

AMD Athalon XP
Asus mobo, nForce2
Geil memory
Asus nVidia card

Fast processor and lots of RAM is about all you need to know.

Graphics card makes little difference to setting it up. It helps to have a decent card if you want top notch graphics, but the better cards can be harder to set up i.e. ATi.

i would check out www.overclockers.co.uk for amd64 2800+ as they arent that much more and a hell of a lot faster gcc is meant to compile in under 30 mins and has an upgrade path

also as much as i hate{1} to recomend ati aparently they have an 9800pro for £99, also try and get a segate disk or wd raptor

Be sure to get your memory as two sticks to get the best out of an nForce 2 plaform. They need to be plugged into the right slots too.

I know the two things that will probably be picked up on is my hard drive, and graphics card.

The graphics card - I am not intending to play any games part the requirements of something like Age Of Empires, or Comand and Conquer

The hard drive - I'm confused, some people say Maxtor's are excellent, some say they are crap, and advise SeaGate.

Why are you ordering a 17" monitor? If I was you I'd go for a 19" minimum.
I've got the 19" HYUNDAI ImageQuest Q910 my self, and it's quite nice.

look into the nForce board. there are tons of theards about the audio issues. make sure you are aware of the isses so you know what to expect.

and of course make sure to look into issues with the serial ATA controller on this mobo, there are a LOT of sata/raid/silicon-images threads out there.

You can save a few shillings by buying 333MHz memory rather than 400MHz memory. Running asynchronous memory and processor busses can actualy drop performace.

You are unlikely to upgrade to a 400MHz FSB processor. There is only the other 3000+ and the 3200+. AMD are not going to make faster 32 bit processors. There would be some 32 bit/64 bit overlap then, which would hurt the uptake of 64 bit silicon. (I remember the 286/386 switch).

Damn. The place I am ordering from (http://overclockers.co.uk) doesnt supply either a 400MHz AMD 3000+ or a 333MHz Geil memory. What should I do?

Overclock your 3000 to a 3200. (change multiplier to 11, FSB to 200)

Its not that bad of an overclock. I over clock my 2500 to a 3200, and use stock cooling. Runs about 48c under full load.

I've never bought from Overclockers but I have browsed their site.
I've never had any bother with Dabs, even when I needed to return stuff that was dead on arrival.

Shop around (if you haven't already) - you may get better pricing

I may look into WD, but they are pretty expensive. I was thinking i'd buy the DVD-Rom/CD Re-Rw seperately, so I could copy CD's straight off. And yes, I do need a Floppy drive, since it's the only way I can get files from my house to my school and vice versa.
