That's both a matter of preference and budget.
I'd personally go with an Asus board, AMD processor, creative soundblaster, nvidia, linksys eth. |

Fast processor and lots of RAM is about all you need to know.
Graphics card makes little difference to setting it up. It helps to have a decent card if you want top notch graphics, but the better cards can be harder to set up i.e. ATi. _________________ My blog

also as much as i hate{1} to recomend ati aparently they have an 9800pro for £99, also try and get a segate disk or wd raptor
{1} which is a lot _________________ Giay tay nam | Giay nam cao cap | Giay luoi |

Verted,
Be sure to get your memory as two sticks to get the best out of an nForce 2 plaform. They need to be plugged into the right slots too.
Are you going to be building your own? _________________ Regards,

Dual channel does not increase the clock rate, just the data rate. So it can matter. _________________ we are microsoft, lower your firewalls and surrender your pc's. we will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own. your culture will adapt and service us. resistance is futile. |

Ok, On Wednesday, I will be ordering the following:
AMD Athalon Barton XP3000+ 333 FSB
Asus A7N8X-E Duluxe nForce2 (Socket A)
Geil 512 (2x256mb) PC3200
Sony DVD Rom
Sony Cd-Rw
Asus V9520 Magic/T GeForce FX 5200 128mb
Maxtor DiamondMax Plus9 80GB SATA 8mb cache
OcUK Floppy Drive
Antec Sonata Piano Black Quiet Case
Antec 380w TruePower Silent PSU
Hyandai ImageQuest 17" CRT monitor
Vantec Stealth 120mm fan
Creative Speakers
Creative Desktop 6000
I know the two things that will probably be picked up on is my hard drive, and graphics card.
The graphics card - I am not intending to play any games part the requirements of something like Age Of Empires, or Comand and Conquer
The hard drive - I'm confused, some people say Maxtor's are excellent, some say they are crap, and advise SeaGate. _________________ Thanks,

Why are you ordering a 17" monitor? If I was you I'd go for a 19" minimum.
I've got the 19" HYUNDAI ImageQuest Q910 my self, and it's quite nice. |

look into the nForce board. there are tons of theards about the audio issues. make sure you are aware of the isses so you know what to expect.
and of course make sure to look into issues with the serial ATA controller on this mobo, there are a LOT of sata/raid/silicon-images threads out there. |

Verted,
You can save a few shillings by buying 333MHz memory rather than 400MHz memory. Running asynchronous memory and processor busses can actualy drop performace.
You are unlikely to upgrade to a 400MHz FSB processor. There is only the other 3000+ and the 3200+. AMD are not going to make faster 32 bit processors. There would be some 32 bit/64 bit overlap then, which would hurt the uptake of 64 bit silicon. (I remember the 286/386 switch). _________________ Regards,

Damn. The place I am ordering from (http://overclockers.co.uk) doesnt supply either a 400MHz AMD 3000+ or a 333MHz Geil memory. What should I do? _________________ Thanks,

Overclock your 3000 to a 3200. (change multiplier to 11, FSB to 200) |

I dont really want to overclock. I'm only going to be using the CPU fan that they give you. _________________ Thanks,

Its not that bad of an overclock. I over clock my 2500 to a 3200, and use stock cooling. Runs about 48c under full load. |

Verted,
I've never bought from Overclockers but I have browsed their site.
I've never had any bother with Dabs, even when I needed to return stuff that was dead on arrival.
Shop around (if you haven't already) - you may get better pricing _________________ Regards,

I'd buy a Sony DVD+-RW instead of a DVD-ROM and CD-RW, they're not expensive anymore.
Do you really need a floppy drive?
As for the Maxtor, they're ok. If you care about noise, buy Seagate or Samsung; if you want performance, buy Western Digital. |

I'm not sure about that-- my Samsung drive is faster than my WD Caviar, and it's virtually silent. It is larger, though, so that might be influencing the speed. The Samsung SpinPoints are highly recommended (here). |

I may look into WD, but they are pretty expensive. I was thinking i'd buy the DVD-Rom/CD Re-Rw seperately, so I could copy CD's straight off. And yes, I do need a Floppy drive, since it's the only way I can get files from my house to my school and vice versa. _________________ Thanks,
