if you compile your kernel normally, not using genkernel, where will the generated initrd be?
do you need to turn on a specific kernel config option for it to generate an initrd file?

| An initrd is not generated when you compile your own kernel, and you normally don't need one unless you are doing something fancy like root on LVM. |
