Hi! Looks like my first try at the installation did not go so well :( . When I reboot my pc it comes up with the following.

Booting Gentoo Linux 2.4.25
root=(hd0,0)
Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83
kernel /kernel-2.4.25-gentoo root=/dev/ram0 init=/linuxrc real_root=/dev/hda3 vga=791

Error 15 file not found

Any ideas what could be the cause of this? I believe I followed all stages of the install manual. I get a purple screen and then the grub command stuff.

I don't know if it matters or not, but I don't think 'root=(hd0,0)' necessarily needs an equals sign.

part of my grub.conf:
Code:
title=Gentoo Linux 2.6.5-r1 (+fb)
root (hd0,1)
kernel /kernel-2.6.5-gentoo-r1 root=/dev/hda5 video=vesafb:ywrap,mtrr vga=0x317
initrd=/initrd-1024x768

title=Gentoo Linux 2.6.5-r1
root (hd0,1)
kernel /kernel-2.6.5-gentoo-r1 root=/dev/hda5

# Windows
title=Windows XP
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
chainloader +1

Make sure the name of your kernel doesn't have a -r1 on the end... that's quite a common one!

And post your /etc/fstab and /boot/grub/grub.conf here. It is easier to find the error if we can see how they look like.
Also you tell us your partitioning.

I'm not sure if I understand what you mean.

Some people accidentally forget to put that on the end of their kernel name in grub.conf. So the kernel is called 2.6.5-gentoo-r1 in /boot, but in grub.conf it says 2.6.5-gentoo, thus causing the file not found error. It wasn't directed towards you - I've just realised how it would sound if you read it like that :oops: Sorry about that!

In your grub.conf
kernel=bah-r1
Check in your /boot to se if your kernel really has the -r1 after the name.

No worries, I just thought you meant I installed the wrong kernel. That would explain why things keep breaking :wink:
