Hi there, I need help:

I needed to backup a Maxtor hard disk 6GB. Heard of partimage, emerged it and tried to use it for the task (connecting the hard disk as primary device on secondary IDE channel, so it goes to /dev/hdc).

Well, (1) partimage goes into dialog mode regardless of what I write on the command line. (2) partimage almost hangs. It is soooooo slow -- I mean even changing screens: I wait 5 min. after commanding it to go to the next screen or start doing the image. After all, it did the image, but all this slow-down makes it unusable for me.

My hardware: Athlon-tbird 650 MHz, 256 MB RAM, main hdd 13 GB. Tried latest stable (partimage-0.6.2) and unstable (partimage-0.6.4-r1) versions, but no luck.

Anyone having idea what might be going on? Otherwise, gentoo runs great on this hardware and I have no any complains, the opposite.

I seem to talk to myself, but anyhow; someone might come here with a similar problem.

I suddenly guessed that looking at /var/log/messages is not a bad idea and I found this:
Code:

Jun 15 10:48:40 unix-box hdc: dma_timer_expiry: dma status == 0x24
Jun 15 10:48:50 unix-box hdc: DMA interrupt recovery
Jun 15 10:48:50 unix-box hdc: lost interrupt

{repeated many times}

I configured and connected the problematic HDD as slave (/dev/hdb) and now partimage runs great.
