Sto cercando di usare un masterizzatore DVD su USB come dispositivo di backup ma sto incontrando qualche difficoltà.. 
Il masterizzatore è un SONY DRU-700A (che sarebbe la versione interna) montato su un cassettino USB e sto usando un kernel 2.6.6 con il supporto udf modulare mentre il supporto per le periferiche SCSI è dentro il kernel
Il problema mi insorge quando cerco di masterizzare file molto grossi (dell'ordine di 1 Gb - fino a 50 Mb va senza problemi, nell'intervallo 50 - 1000 non ho provato), in pratica è come se s'incasinasse il trasferimento dati...

ed a questo punto seguono migliaia di righe con scsi0 (0:0): rejecting I/O to offline device e la masterizzazione risulta inchiodata...
inoltre provando a "blankarlo" come suggerisce il man di growisofs

Secondo voi da cosa è dovuto questo problema? e sopratutto, come potrei risolverlo?
(domani vedrò se è possibile almeno provare a metterlo, provvisoriamente, su uno slot PCI interno)

Questo probabilmente è un problema con l´usb-storage, ci sono post simili al tuo sulla mailing-list dell-usb-devel e usb-user.
1) Prova col 2.6.7 e col 2.6.7-mm1.
2) Curiosità, per caso il chipset è un genesis ?
Fammi sapere, altrimenti posta il tuo problema, nei dettagli come richiesto nella faq del sito dell'usb.

1) ho messo il kernel gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.7 ed ho provato il masterizzatore sia internamente che su usb...
interno va che è una meraviglia...
su usb sempre lo stesso problema.. inoltre se lo stacco e lo riattacco questo è il messaggio che mi compare su /var/log/messages:

qual'è l'indirizzo dei forum di sviluppo? così provo a darci un'occhiata ed eventualmente posto il postabile
Il kernel 2.6.7-mm1 non è mascherato? (visto che questo Pc una volta sistemato dovrebbe fare da server preferirei evitare di metterci su qualcosa di non completamente testato, per quanto abbia letto che in alcuni casi i pacchetti masked sono perfettamente stabili..)

leggiti le faq e posta sulla usb-devel TUTTE le informazioni richieste. sono tutte persone molto preparate che mi hanno giá risolto vari problemi.
2) Io intendevo il chipset dello scatolotto USB, non il chipset della scheda madre.
Te lo chiedo perché visto che seguo l'usb-devel ci sono vari problemi simili al tuo con questi chipsets e proprio adesso sembra che abbiano trovato una soluzione.

interessante... ho provato a fare il cat di /proc/bus/usb/devices e non dava segni di vita..
adesso che ho riavviato il pc per fare lsusb dava qualcosa... a questo punto suppongo che incasini proprio il controller usb...

Ehmmm  mi sembrava una domanda strana...
in ogni caso adesso ho potuto controllare, ha un chipset genesys..

Finalmente sono riuscito a far funzionare lo scatolotto USB.. 
Dunque sto usando attualmente il kernel gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.7-r3 ed ho "patchato" a mano il file /drivers/usb/storage/usb.c nel modo seguente:
