I've heard that people have had problems with this in the past. Exactly what problems are they, and can they be overcome? _________________ Thanks,

The APIC issues are pretty much fixed AFAIK, and there's nothing else wrong with my A7N8X.
Edit: the actual problem was that enabling APIC would usually result in random lockups. Newer kernels include a fix for it, and you can always just disable it instead. If you want more information, search the forums, there are several threads on this. _________________ Per Ardua Ad Astra

I have no problems with mine-just don't try to use APIC.
One other thing, I don't use the onboard nforce2 audio-hardware mixing doesn't exist with current alsa drivers. You can use dmix but I had an extra SBLive! kicking around so I use that. _________________ A paranoid is someone who knows a little of what's going on.

Thanks. Thats not too bad, so I will probably actually get the board. Erm, what exactly is APIC, and what is audio-hardware mixing? _________________ Thanks,

Erm, what exactly is APIC, and what is audio-hardware mixing? | APIC is an Advanced Programmable Interrupt Controller. Essentially, it's a replacement for the old Programmable Interrupt Controllers (PIC) that plays better with SMP. Also, it's not to be confused with ACPI.
As for the audio hardware mixing, it simply means that you can have two processes talking to ALSA at once, and the hardware will mix the streams together. Essentially it's the hardware doing what ESD and Arts have done in software. It's nice if you can get it, but it's quite possible to live without. |

Ok, so you're saying I should get the ASUS A7N8X-E Duluxe and everything will be fine, if I get a sound card? _________________ Thanks,

You can use the onboard sound card perfectly well, but you'll have to use ESD or Arts for software mixing. But since almost every sound program I've come across has support for both, you should be fine. |

The nvidia soundstorm works alright, but yeah, you can't play 2 sounds at once (ie, if you have mp3s playing and then start a video clip, the video clip won't have sound). _________________ 'Cause I can. |

I have sound with a soundstorm. I don't get anything other than basic features (no DD 5.1 encoding, hardware mixing, etc), but I do have sound working. _________________ 'Cause I can. |

For more info see this article.
Basically you have an mcp-T southbridge but no linux driver for it. all you can access are the basic mcp sound hardware(ac97 codec). |

Nvidias SoundStorm is not supported in Linux in any way or form sorry. | The SoundStorm works perfectly with the i810 driver. You just don't get hardware mixing. |

Has anyone gotten that Asus proprietary Wi-Fi slot/card and antenna (that ships
with this board) to work under Gentoo? I am actually interested in running it not
just as a wireless LAN adapter but also as an access point.
Thanks,
