My first gentoo install is up and running in textmode. I havent excluded X in my USE-variabel ("-X"). X is installed by default, according to the Gentoo handbok. How is it possible to check if X is installed?

I didn't see that in the handbook with my first 3 installations; I emerged X afterward.

Try this:

Code:
emerge search xfree

If it's installed, you should see the version installed under the heading x11-base/xfree

Hope that helps :D

If you have xorg installed instead of xfree and do emerge -s xfree, it will show that you dont have xfree. If you then do emerge -s xorg it will show that xorg is installed.

Of course, you could always try this:
Code:
X -version

This way you don't even have to know which version a dependency may or may not have installed

I didn´t install X, so I had to run "emerge XFree". I don´t know if the Gentoo hanbook is up to date or not. Anyway, part B chapter 1 talks about USE-flags. The document list default installation, if you don´t add or exclude any part. X is included in the default list. I thought x should be installed by default, since I didn´t excluded X by adding "-X" in my USE-flags. Maybe that was a missreading of the Gentoo handbook.

Yep, you just misunderstood. You still have to emerge any packages you want. The USE flags will just help to customize the compilation of those packages so you don't have unwanted features compiled in.
