I have a server running at work running kernel 2.4.26 with a 3Com 3c905B ethernet card. I have several network services running on it (mail, apache, jabber). At times, the server has trouble establishing some network connections. Everyone else will be running fine, but one or two people will have the mail hang for a minute, or Jabber will drop the connection.

I was running Nagios for a bit on this server, and sometimes it would not be able to make outgoing connections to monitor other servers.

So, is there something I need to tune to allow more connections? Am I just trying to run too much on one server? Any hints as to what I can look at to try to narrow this problem down?

If that is all that you are running then you certainly don't have an overloaded server on your hands (as long as the server is more than a 400MHz with 128Mb/RAM). I would
Code:
emerge iptraf
and see what is going on. Check your logs to see about malformed packets as Windows machines do have a tendancy to have crappy IP stacks.
