newbie G4/400 internal modem issues

Am I going to be able to get this internal modem to work? (G4/400 Gigabit Ethernet). I built serial and PPP support into the kernel from the LiveCD 2004.01 (ppc-development-sources-2.6.1-r1). I emerged pppconfig from the packages CD, but I just can't seem to configure this thing correctly. I'm obviously quite the newbie. I set the port to ttyS0 in pppconfig and Kppp, but I just get a "modem busy" message.

I wouldn't mind purchasing an external modem if that will help, but maybe the solution is obvious (not to me).
