Hi. My friends got me an AlphServer 4100 from a surplus sale, and I'm trying to put Gentoo on it. I have no previous experience with any non-x86 machine, I have never installed (or used) Gentoo, but I do have some experience using/installing Redhat... but everything tends to just work with x86...
So. I've got my LiveCD working (1.4rc1.test3 hung on cd access, test4 works), but I don't have network... dhcpcd failed for eth0.
From what I can tell from the alphabios/show network and boot information, it's got a tulip ethernet card. If I set it to "enabled" in the alphabios, it gets the correct IP etc. I have tried with it both enabled and disabled, same results.
I did
#modprobe tulip
and got:
Note: /etc/modules.conf is more recent than /lib/modules/2.4.19-xfs-gentoo-cd/modules.dep
but no other message. eth0 still does not show up with ifconfig.
I tried to modprobe the other files that come up from
# ls /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/net
but they give insmod errors (and they are all .o files, which seeems fishy...)
Any ideas on how to get net up and running?
Thanks!
PS: In case you care, system specs, as much as I know so far:
1 CPU, 466MHz
1.5GB RAM
SCSI CD-ROM
20GB SCSI RAID |

Ok, I feel like a dumb-ass. Maybe someone else will learn from my oversight...
#modprobe tulip
does get the driver loaded... but (I'm guessing) since there is no IP address yet, eth0 doesn't show up on a `ifconfig`, you have to do `ifconfig eth0`
Then, following the instructions,
#dhcpcd eth0
gets dhcp going, we get an IP, and both lo and eth0 show up with `ifconfig`
Yeah! |
