Greetings:

I am having trouble getting the VESA framebuffer to do DPMS blanking on the console. The screen goes to a black background, but the monitor is still on. I would like to turn have the monitor turned off instead of just going to black.

Has anyone gotten this to work successfully?

I've tried setterm. Setterm will control the amount of time before the screen goes blank, but no amount of fiddling around will get it to use DPMS to poweroff the monitor. Setterm works properly if I turn the framebuffer off (remove vga=792 from the kernel line in the grub.conf file).

DPMS blanking works properly from X. I don't want to have to install X (and have it running all of the time) on my machines which don't need it just to get the monitor to turn off.

This is a problem with ALL of my Gentoo machines. They all exhibit the same behavior - DPMS works fine under X, DPMS works fine without the framebuffer, but DPMS fails to turn off the monitor if using the framebuffer.

I'm using the VESA framebuffer driver in all cases. Current 2.4 kernels. Variety of different video boards - older ATI and NVidia mostly. CRT and flat panel monitors.

If anyone has gotten this working and would care to share, I would appreciate it.

I am able to get my monitor to turn off in the frame buffer. The command i used was

setterm -powersave on
setterm -blank 5

Even though blank is supposed to only turn the screen black, my monitor turns off ( i don't know why ). I have acpi enabled in my kernel(vanilla-2.4.26) ( not sure if it is needed )

I just noticed that the monitor turns off only if i use the intelfb driver. If i use the vesafb driver, it blanks without going to sleep mode.
