gentoo-dev-sources 2.6.7 compile fails

I've been searching google, the bugs database, the forum, but I found nothing. Here's my problem:

1. I downloaded the latest gentoo-dev-sources (2.6.7)
2. Relinked the /usr/src/linux symlink
3. Copied the .config file from gentoo-dev-sources 2.6.5-r1
4. cd'ed into the new kernel directory
5. Did a 'make oldconfig', answering no to all new options
6. Just in case, did a 'make menuconfig' and saved the new config
7. Did a 'make && make modules && make modules install'

...and here's what I get:

I got this twice (unmerged and re-emerged) and I get it too if I just do 'make'. I also tried 'make clean' and 'make dep' (I read something about this and decided to try).

BTW, the error message is correct, there is no drivers/pci/devlist.h. Actually, there is no devlist.h anywhere in the 2.6.7 directory tree. In the 2.6.5 directory a drivers/pci/devlist.h does exist.

Does anyone know if I can safely copy the 2.6.5 kernel devlist.h file? Does anybody else have the same problem as I do? Or does everybody have the file? How can it be that it's missing?

I've compiled lots of kernels, and I never had any problems. If someone could help me, I would be very grateful.

I've been investigating a bit in the drivers/pci directory and I think the gen-devlist program has to create the devlist.h file.

It looks to me as if there's a problem with the paths because the drivers/pci directory exists and is accessible. If make would enter the directory (cd drivers/pci), it would be able to find the gen-devlist app, and execute it (./gen-devlist) creating the devlist.h file.

What I don't understand is why it doesn't seem to find the drivers/pci directory.

Anyone?

I'm starting to think that the problem isn't in the kernel, but in the make program or something like that. I just got another compile error while emerging gdm. Like the kernel error, make complained it couldn't find a directory that really did exist (the 'po' directory). I tried twice and then I decided to re-emerge make. After that I could compile gdm.

The kernel still fails to compile, but I'm suspecting that it's make or something like that.

Does anyone know of something I could do at this point, or do I just give up? Is there anyone who's getting similar errors, where make can't find an existing file or directory?

I think that the make tools are part of binutils. You can have problems if yours are out of date.

I tried compiling the vanilla 2.6.7 kernel (development-sources) but I get a compile error there too. My current (2.6.5-r1) kernel compiles fine.

Do I really have to wait for 2.6.8 to come out? Can nobody give me any tip?

Post (or PM me) your /usr/src/linux/.config (or the .config you are using) and I'll have a look at it. What CPU are you trying to compile for?

Thanks for still bothering NeddySeagoon, I have an Athlon XP 2600.

Here's my .config after doing a make oldconfig (and answering no to all questions) and after disabling the "PCI device name database" option.

Also, I I'm going to emerge the 2.6.6 development-sources, and I'm going to make the 2.6.7 kernel with a default config. I'll post my findings when I'm done.

Nope. kernel 2.6.7 is also in gentoo-dev-sources, but with the gentoo patches applied.
AFAIK:
vanilla-sources = 2.4 series kernel (vanilla)
gentoo-sources = 2.4 series kernel with gentoo patches
development-sources = 2.6 series kernel (vanilla)
gentoo-dev-sources = 2.6 series kernel with gentoo patches

Where = where emerge unpacks the kernel (/usr/src/linux-2.6.7-gentoo)
User = root, so I can't imagine it being a permission problem. Actually, the drivers/pci directory is world readable.

I tried a default config and got the same error. Also, I tried the 2.6.6 (development-sources, the gentoo-dev-sources skipped the 2.6.6 version) and got the same error.

That's a reaaly nice offer, but it's not necessary. My 2.6.5 kernel works perfectly, and I much rather wait until I find an answer to why make complains about not finding a file that actually does exist.

I really think it's make (or some program involved with make) that's broken. Today, I tried to emerge kde 3.2.3 and I got yet another "File or directory not found" error for a directory that did exist. This time I decided to re-emerge portage and after that kde compiled fine (but the kernel still fails). That's three times the same (incorrect) "not found" error!

I already re-emerged binutils, make, automake and portage hoping that would solve something but no luck. My guess is that some day I'll update the broken program and my kernel will compile.

Now I'm intruiged too. The latest gentoo-dev-sources I have in portage is 2.6.5-r1, which is from an emerge sync at the end of last week.

It looks like I must have built the wrong kernel. I'm syncing up now and will have another go but probably not tonight.

I solved the problem!!!
After re-reading the error, I saw that the problem could also be in the 'cd' command. So I started to unalias some alias I had, with no luck, but...

...then I unset the CDPATH variable and the kernel compiled!!!

I read about the CDPATH variable in the "greatest tips" section, but now I know it can break stuff. So the lesson is:

Don't use the CDPATH variable!
