Done a bit of searching but cannot see an obvious answer here. Possible that I can't see the woods for the trees tho.

Got a decent 2.6.7-rc3 kernel running - very smooth :)

Unmerged all previous 2.4 kernels.

When running emerge -puD world I'm told that kernel-headers-2.4.21-rc3 will be upgraded. Also looking at the package database for kernel-headers it says that this is the current set of headers for the 2.6.* kernels.

I was always under the impression that the headers had to match the kernel version in use.

Hopefully someone can correct what I'm missunderstanding here.

Thanks

Nope. This was actually discussed on LKML just yesterday. :)

Thanks Ah Pook!

That's fully explained and it now makes full sense to me. :)

The lkml post had a link to a much earlier lkml post from Linus which I recall reading from discussions on the use of the /usr/src/linux symlink. I didn't remember the headers part tho.

/me makes a note to keep a better eye on the lkml in future
