Pretty much says it all. I can certainly tell that stage one was not ment for dial-up. But I thought I would try my hand at it. When I went to run the bootstrap.sh, there is a portage*.bz2 file that needs to be downloaded that wasn't available on the live-cd. Unfortunately, wvdial wasn't part of the stage one tar file either. What are my options for connecting to the internet? I just purchased a new external serial modem just for this trick. :P

That's something you'll have to do during the install when you're running off the live cd.

Gentoo generally assumes that you're online using some form of fast connection, if only bacause dial up is so incredibly slow when downloading packages.

One option would be to do a stage 3 GRP install and then use kppp to get online. Once you're on you can do a emerge -e world and compile everything on the box.

That sounds about like my only option. Thanks for quick reply. I thought I'd have to wait a few days. Nice forum.

Just spent most of my day dealing with inconsistancies between the portage and distfiles. All of that could have been avoided had a dialer been ready to use on the install cd.

I'm pretty sure the Knoppix LiveCD includes wvdial. You might want to boot that up and follow The Gentoo Linux alternative installation method.

you did do an emerge sync once you had the install finished (and not before)?
