now i have another problem..... the installation just refuses to detect my ethernet card. "ifconfig eth0" results in eth0: error fetching interface information: Device not found. i read the book and it says do, net-setup, or dhcpcd eth0 or ifconfig eth0 ${IP_ADDR} broadcast ${BROADCAST} netmask ${NETMASK} up and the rest of the other stuff.
every time i type one of these commands, it says | Code: | hdb: irq timeout: status=0xd0 {Busy}

| yes. i just saw that but i keep trying every command! this is a stupid question but do you have to have the ethernet cable plugged in when you do all these stuff or not? |

you should try knoppix ... i just installed gentoo for the first time and i used it and everything went perfectly and you have a fully working OS to play around in while things emerge.

Just a reminder
"install-x86-universal-2004.1.iso" Has some bug in it I think. This iso never found my network¨.
Don´t forget the bottle of aspirin.
I ALSO RAN ACROSS THIS POST BELOW
There is a similar long running discussion about this problem over here https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=166814 It has more to do with the install from the 2004.1 CD. Apparently there is a bug in it with network detection. But I'm getting the same problem as you are. My system is up, and running, but now I can't get the NIC to work if I reboot. I don't have Firewire, but the module is trying to load anyway. For me this works as a temp measure.

modprobe natsemi <- for my Netgear FA311 NIC
But as soon as I reboot I have to do it all over again. Waiting to hear a solution to this.

I think he should add 'natsemi' into his /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.X file or at least compile the module into the kernel.
Anyways, AMD64Linux, pop the Gentoo Linux CD back into your cdrom drive and boot that up. At the command prompt, type the following commands:

modprobe 8139too
dhcpcd eth0
