It seems as though, my soundcard is not listed in /proc/pci. I am unsure why this is. My soundcard is a NeoMagic NM2. Why is it not showing up? I am confused quite a bit. Any help is appreciated. Thank you. If you need more info, I shall supply it. |

Are you able to USE your sound card? IIRC if you don't have sound support built into your kernel, it wont show up in /proc.
Of course, if you can use your sound card, Im stumped myself.
Question of my own, is there a /proc/audio? _________________ { NO -U } { STRIP }

Well, I am recompiling my kernel as we speak. I tried some other stuff. But anyway, I cannot get any sound in KDE, and since I cannot find my soundcard in /proc/pci, I cannot continue with ALSA. I do notice though, my computer can make that system bell noise in the console. |

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it wont show up in /proc unless you have it built into the kernel (though dmesg might still pick it up, I dont remember for sure).
if nothing else, just enableing "Sound & multimedia support" (or whatever the opt is actually called) should get it to show up for you.
As for the system bell, I cant think of a stituation where that WONT be detected and enabled. Its more or less completely independent of the actual sound system.

Hmm. I recompiled it, and it still didn't show up. Do you think if I upgraded kernels (from 2.4.25 to 2.6.x) would help? I am still stuck as to get this working. I hear OSS will most likely work, but they charge for their services. Here is what I got after running Dmesg:

You should be able to get it in 2.4 no trouble (well, a little trouble aparently) but I don't know enough about 2.6 to offer help there.
Did you compile sound support in as a module or built into the kernel? If its a module, don't forget to load it (/etc/autoload.d/kernel-2.4) on boot, else you still wont get anything
Have you tried following the ALSA Guide? _________________ { NO -U } { STRIP }

You edited that after I quoted you didn't ya?
Anyways, when you load the gentoo live-cd, does it pick up your sound card & driver? (May not be the best match driver, but if it picks it up you'll atleast know it works) _________________ { NO -U } { STRIP }

I have yet to see if Live CD picks it up. As far as I know, it doesn't, but I haven't really checked. |

It should say right before it drops you off to the CLI. For me, it prints it towards the center of the screen, and says something like "Sound device detected....$DEVICENAME....using driver $DRIVERNAME" _________________ { NO -U } { STRIP }

I have tried Knoppix, and I booted from Gentoo Live CD. It didn't automatically detect the sound card. Knoppix does have sndconfig, but it had an error when I selected the one I wanted. Does Gentoo come with sndconfig? Or is that a part of OSS? |
