Hi, i'm pretty new to Gentoo, and have been fiddling around compiling kernel 2.6.7. I have a compiled 2.6.3 that works, but doesn't include a lot of device support that i need, so i decided to start over again with 2.6.7 now. The problem is that i can't get through the boot process. My sym???? SCSI driver, version 2, which works fine for my Tekram 390U3W in kernel 2.6.3, doesn't work in 2.6.7. At some point in the boot, it enters an infinite loop, where it seems to be trying different fastSCSI settings and failing (i see 20MB/s 40MB/s, etc flashing by). The only words i can really make out are "Domain validation: detected failure, dropping back
This goes on ad infinitum. Can someone who knows more about linux kernels (ie everyone) please help me out?
It worked once when i removed SCSI CDROM support from the kernel, but apparently that was a fluke because i can't reproduce it.
On the SCSI HBA are three disks, and a 16x DVD (Pioneer 305?).
Thanks
On a completely unrelated note, is there somewhere that walks through the installation of GUIs like x+KDE or x+GNOME? I can't find anything more than references to problems with the process. Is this something that simply requires emerging the respective packages? |
