I'm trying to set up cups to use my hplaserjet 4l. And I'm running into the following problems.

The web admin doesn't work. I keep getting errors, usually implying that it either can't find thigns or doesn't have the authority to do things. I'm logging in as root, so I'm not sure what the problem is.

It will let me modify an existing printer. But it won't let me add or delete printers.

Using the command line, I can add and delete printers. But things still aren't happy.

As I understand it, I've got two drivers avaiable. laserjet.ppd (comes with cups) and eng-GB/pcl-4l.ppd.gz (from gimp-print).

When I use the laserjet.ppd, I can print. But (at least when printing from Konqueror) it cuts off the top and bottom. And I can't seem to find anywhere to set a reasonable default margins.

When I use the gimp-print driver (which I believe I used successfully before converting over to Gentoo), the printer just spits out blank pages.

Any suggestions?

It's hard to tell what your problem with the web tool is based on your description. What exactly does it do when it doesn't work?
As far as the margin problem, try looking on linuxprinting.org for a better ppd. I had the same problem with a 5L, and I found a better ppd that fixed the problem.

When I try to add a new printer, I get all the way through the process and then it displays:

Error:

client-error-not-authorized

I'm currently logged into KDE as a regular user, but I logged into the cgi program using root. I've also tried this when logged in as root, and got the same message.

Also, it shows a half-dozen or so apparently identical ppds for the hplaserjet (specifically gimp-print ppds). I'm not sure why I'm getting the repeats.

I grabbed a new ppd from linuxprinting.org, and that only showed up once on the list. I'll try to install it from the command line now...

Well, that looks much better. Didn't cut off the top. So at least it looks like, thanks to everyone's advice, I fixed the printing problem. But I still don't kow why the web administration isn't working.

Same with me. :(

I can wait 10+ minutes before the printer starts to print. The first page always gets a line of control chars, but not the text it should. I'm using HP Laserjet 6L with laserjet.ppd connected via a smc router (lpd://router-ip/lp)

@shadow303: Which .ppd are you using?

I'm using the one reccomended by linuxprinting.org. I downloaded it from them and followed their instructions. All the scripts that they require were already on the machine.

Prints fine now. But I still get errors using the web admin.

Cool, it works. :)

I really don't need the web admin functionality, so that's no problem for me.
