|
|
Hi!
I have just emerged freecraft and the fc media project, it runs cool. But now I have read in the documentation:
Quote: | The engine can be used to build C&C, WC2, SC and AOE-like real-time strategy (RTS) games |
Has anyone tested freecraft with those games? I used to think that FC was just a clone of Warcraft, but maybe i could revive my old Starcraft CD. _________________ J'aime la bière, même si la recette n'est pas libre. |

With the key-words being "build" (as in: program it yourself) and "like". So: No, I don't think it's possible to play Starcraft with FC. |

Well Freecraft got renamed to Stratagus, which is what you really want as it's moved on since the final Freecraft release. (Project was renamed due to Blizzard objecting.)
However, Stratagus is not yet in portage. _________________ Want Free games?

Well this is somewhat weird, in /usr/share/games/freecraft/tools I find:
Code: | aledoc build.sh data startool wartool |
By default, the build.sh grabs data from the Warcraft2 CD, it calls the binary wartool. Now this is strange to find another binary called startool. I shall see what I can change in the script, who knows, it could work. _________________ J'aime la bière, même si la recette n'est pas libre. |

the only way to play starcraft is through wine. sucky, but what are ya gonna do? this actually makes me mad, because i really enjoy starcraft. it is such an excellent multiplayer game. if in fact your startool idea is true CoinCoin, then i will be an extremely happy guy here. |

mirko: if you were wondering, I got Starcraft to install correctly with WINE. Wine is a pretty hefty package, but hey _________________ Folding@home -Join the Linux team (163)! |

I may be remembering this wrong, but the original stated aim of the FreeCraft project was to create a Linux version of the *Craft engine, the idea being that you could copy the data files from your Windows CD (a bit like getting the Linux binaries for Return to Castle Wolfenstein). Unfortunately, Blizzard got wind and gave the team an ultimatum, at which point they stopped trying to mimic the *Craft engine and decided to concentrate on building their own one. _________________ Dermot

Guys, I am (was) as Starcraft fan, but I have heard Stratagus is cool. It is in games-engines though. What is a game engine, I went onto the Stratagus site and I saw game screenshots. It would be nice to have a Starcraft-like game made for especially for linux!!
UT2003 is good to though. PS - Anyone know how to extract any fun out of Freeciv, I tried that out on Suse 9.2 and it looked like a reasonable strategy game, just hard to understand, some show me how to play/enjoy that game?? _________________ Carry out the bigger will for your life.... |

Well Blizzard mainly objected due to trademark reasons (the name being too similar) rather than technical reasons. There's still 'wargus' which is a project that uses stratagus to play the various *craft games. _________________ Want Free games?
