Hi.

Ive been messing about with knoppix for around six months now. I must say I really have enjoyed learing the (very) basics of linux, with not one blue screen of death in those six months. After moving XP onto my newer drive I had to format over its installation. (I only use XP for games now)

I think its about time to try another distro.

After reading and taking advice from a friend ive decided to try gentoo, and im really excited, although im not expecting it to be easy.

</rant>

I found gentoo at "http://www.linuxiso.org/distro.php?distro=45". There are two versions of the i386 .iso, a minimal installer and a universall installer. Im guessing the universall on is better for a n00b like me, with more packages etc but what are the major differences????

Thanks.

P.S. What is gentoos hardware detection like?

Really the only difference between the minimal and universal cds is that the universal cd has source files and software packages that you can just as easily download from the net. If you have a fast connection and don't mind downloading, I recommend using the minimal cd. That way you'll get the newest packages. Plus, it'll save you from having to update again later.

One minor thing I've noticed is that the minimal cd doesn't seem to have a very high success rate in the booting department. For some reason I can only boot off of it ~80% of the time.
