Hi,
DNS has become horribly broken on my laptop. It hardlocked last night so I suspect binary corruption of some kind. (Shared lib that does dns?)
Anyway, I can't ping, use kmail, konqueror, firefox, or any other network applications. They all report 'host not found'. However, the 'host' command succeeds. (Perhaps it does it's own internal dns)
My DNS is set by the DHCP server, and /etc/resolv.conf is set correctly. Also, I have vmware on my machine, and when I bring up a VM with bridged networking, DNS works fine on that. (It's where I'm posting this from.)
Here's an example: Code: | simon@shiro simon $ ping www.google.com
ping: unknown host www.google.com
simon@shiro simon $ wget www.google.com
--10:19:50-- http://www.google.com/
=> `index.html'
Resolving www.google.com... failed: Name or service not known.
simon@shiro simon $ host www.google.com
www.google.com is an alias for www.google.akadns.net.
www.google.akadns.net has address 66.102.9.104
www.google.akadns.net has address 66.102.9.99
simon@shiro simon $ ping 66.102.9.99
PING 66.102.9.99 (66.102.9.99) 56(84) bytes of data.

64 bytes from 66.102.9.99: icmp_seq=3 ttl=238 time=700 ms
--- 66.102.9.99 ping statistics ---
3 packets transmitted, 3 received, 0% packet loss, time 2001ms

How can I solve this? My guess is I need to re-emerge something... If so, what package? _________________ "Pokey, are you drunk on love?"

Nothing to do with the ISP. It's specific to my Gentoo installation on this laptop. Everything works fine on all other machines on the network, including other Gentoo boxen. (We have six)
I've tried revdep-rebuild, to no avail. Am now re-emerging glibc.... Could do with other ideas. _________________ "Pokey, are you drunk on love?"

Never mind. Rebuilding glibc fixed it, after all. _________________ "Pokey, are you drunk on love?"
