Hi,
For some reason when I try to install Gentoo Linux, I keep getting this message:
BusyBOx v1.00-pre7 (2004.04.18-11:32+0000) Built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for al list of built in commands
/bin/ash: can't access tty; job control turned off
It gives me this message after:
Attempting to mount CD: /newroot/dev/ide/cd/c0b1t0u0
Any help would be appreciated!!

| You need to give more info if you want people to help you. What kind of machine are you trying to install on? At which point do you get those messages? What install cd are you using? |

I have the same problem, and i think it is caused by us not understanding this section of the installation manual.
The section is 11.a
It says
"If you want root to be able to log on through the serial console, add tts/0 to /etc/securetty:
Code listing 2: Adding tts/0 to /etc/securetty
# echo "tts/0" >> /etc/securetty"
I tried booting the computer with knoppix and editing the tts/0 part out of the /etc/securetty file, but i can't get past the read-only rights that knoppix assigns to the file systems.
i think removing that part from the file is the answer to this problem, but as i can't do it, i don't know whether it will work or not.
If any of the linux veterans know a way to do this, please post, any feedback would be good |

Ok, I have:
Dell Dimension XPS T600r
550MHZ
256 Mb RAM
40 GB hard drive
The problem occurs when I boot off the CD and it gets to the point:
Attempting to mount CD: /newroot/dev/ide/cd/c0b1t0u0
After this.....it sits there for a bit and then this message pops up:

I have the same errors trying to install on a scsi hd and scsi burner on a Adeptec 2940uw controller with a rtl8139d nic card.
It gets to the point where it checks the file but can't find it.
I don't have a firewire card in this box yet it is detected after my hid devices. |

I ran across that message when doing an install with a scsi hard drive. Adding - doscsi after the kernel name fixed it for me.
