Okay.. sorry if this has been posted before, but a quick search didn't show many results I was looking for.
My situation is basically: whenever I unplug the power to the power supply for my desktop (to move the computer for cleaning or something) and plug it back in, my bios is reset. Is this normal behavior? Once when my computer was out of commission for a week or so (broken processor) when i booted it back up, I had multiple errors related to the 4 year time difference between the two boot times because the cmos clock was reset.
So i guess the question is... is this normal behavior? or (as I suspect..) is the CMOS battery dead? _________________ Folding@home -Join the Linux team (163)! |

Sounds like it could be a dead battery, yeah.
Do you get a "CMOS checksum error" or similar on boot? |

Erm... on linux boot? Or when BIOS is getting everything set and ready?
I don't think there are any errors displayed during the linux boot. dmesg | grep -i cmos doesn't return anything, anyway. As for BIOS boot, nothing. _________________ Folding@home -Join the Linux team (163)! |

On BIOS boot, usually just before it detects the harddrives. I'm not sure if all BIOSes display these errors, but the times I've done a CMOS clear, either by using the CMOS clear jumper or by temporarily removing the battery, a CMOS checksum error has appeared on the next boot, until I reconfigure the BIOS and save the new settings.
I've yet to see a PC with a completely dead CMOS battery (though, I'm sure they exist), but I've seen iMacs that get their dates reset to 1970-something everytime they are rebooted. (however, the Macs don't give any checksum errors or such) |
