I'm trying to update my kernel from gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.5 to 2.6.7, and it seems like no mirrors have linux-2.6.7.tar.bz2. From make.conf:

GENTOO_MIRRORS="ftp://gentoo.chem.wisc.edu/gentoo ftp://ftp.gtlib.cc.gatech.edu/pub/gentoo ftp://gentoo.mirrors.pair.com"

I've looked on a couple other mirrors with an FTP client, and they're missing this file as well. Is there some problem with a lot of mirrors not syncing lately? The same thing happens when I try to update xmame, no mirrors have the tarball for xmame 0.83.1. What's going on here?

Not there yet. What's stopping you from just going to one of the kernel.org mirrors and downloading linux-2.6.7.tar.bz2? Just place it in /usr/portage/distfiles.

Well, nothing, but if there's an ebuild, shouldn't the distfiles be on the servers?

Happens sometimes - the distfiles and rsync mirrors are managed separately. Just wait for a few hours, or download the file manually.

A bit of a bump to say that I've had the same problem with mono, gtk#, and muine. Do the mirrors I'm using just suck, or what? Whose responsibility is it to make sure that the tarball for a package, once an ebuild is put out, is actually put on the distfiles servers? I'm about ready to switch over to Arch or soemthing, this is driving me insane.

Nyarlathotep:
Properly written ebuilds will download from the original release site if a file isn't on the distfiles mirrors (except if it's a Gentoo-only file).
Additionally, many developers are also actively maintaining ebuilds - and those ebuilds occasionally show up in portage before the release files hit the file servers (for example, Todd Berman, who is one of the main Mono developers and is doing amazing things with the ebuilds).
A responsible user would try to simply use a few other mirrors, and if they didn't work (s)he would submit a bug report to https://bugs.gentoo.org and assign it to the corresponding ebuild's maintainer.
If you don't like living on the bleeding edge, then run the stable branch and stop whining. I mean, really. Jeez.

Edit: Clarification.

I AM running the stable branch. 2.6.7 is in stable, xmame 0.83 is stable. The muine stuff doesn't bother me as much, it turns out to be pretty crappy and a memory hog besides... but why would no mirrors have a week-old kernel?

Try to run mirrorselect again, or go to the mirrors page and pick a few other ones manually. You may also want to check /etc/make.conf for sanity as well as emerge --info.
