Sync issue w/ multiple framerate DVD -> AVI conversion

I have a DVD that switches from 24fps progressive to 30fps progressive about a dozen times during the length of the movie. This causes a slight video lag sync issue when the avi is created (using mplayer/mencoder only here for ripping and conversion) as only one fps is assumed, 24 (the 30fps sections, encoded at 24fps, lengthen the video). Is this a new ripping deterent used by the movie industry? Any ideas on how to overcome this?
