I've installed Gentoo 2004.1 AMD64 using the GRP packages.
Now I'm feeling my way to getting a more up to date setup, my internet connection is a 56K modem, so I'm not sure whether "emerge -u world" is what I want to do (but feel free to suggest it).
I did an "emerge sync" and now I'm emerging the odd thing as I find I need it. Will I have problems adding stuff to my gentoo system this way? I have updated from Kernel 2.6.5 to Kernel 2.6.7 and I've been playing around getting KDE + Sound working etc.
The last package I emerged was kdiff3 (so that I could compare the diffs between config.2.6.5 and config.2.6.7) and it dies after I've chosen a couple of files. I'm wondering whether this is a bug with kdiff3 or am I mixing things up by having a GRP install of KDE plus this new emerged package and a nice new 2.6.7 kernel?
So given that I started from 2004.1 GRP, am I OK to just emerge the latest stuff in bits and pieces? If not, can I just update a limited amount of stuff to give me a stable system?
thanks |

If you're using a 56K modem, you may wish to finish your connection ASAP. I'd suggest you to do
That way, you'll get your software downloaded ASAP. And then, you can disconnect from Internet and run to compile and install everything.
If you want to get your dependencies upgraded too (I.E, you have GNOME and want GTK updated), add the "D" flag to the emerge options (emerge -ufD whatever, emerge -uD whatever). _________________ Cómo usar Portage correctamente |

If you have access to a computer with a fast connection, there are good ways to do this. Here's a few different resources to start with. I'm sure you can figure some stuff out from there.
Oh, and you think you don't have access to a fast internet connection? Well you can at least rethink that. There are these very publicly available things often decked out with very publicly available very fast internet connections. You can use netcat to set up a backdoor to run a downloader (for instance, wget has been ported to windows somewhere floating around on the net). You can Google these for more info if you need it. HappyHacker is also a good resource. The computers with CD burners (I've seen 'em; believe me, they exist) are prime targets, and also, most all of the ones that I have seen have Iomega's Zip drives.
Well that's about all I have to say. Have fun! Oh, and remember, if you can get on a first-name basis with the librarians, it is often much easier to get forgiveness than permission _________________ 9 out of 10 geeks prefer supreme_geek_overlord to Satan as the all-powerful dictator of the universe. |
