When I do emerge -uD world portage only downloads one package at a time and then compiles it. Why it is not downloading everything at once?
For instance, I am downloading kde-artworks with somewhat slow connection and my cpu have to be idle. If it had been downloaded during other compilations, total time consumed would be reduced significantly. |

You can emerge -f progname, which will only fetch (download) the programme and not compile it. You can do this at any time to suit your connection and emerge progname later.
It is possible to download other progs while emerging another. The problem with this is that if the emerge of one finishes before the download of the next one it may get a bit confused and give some errors. For example emerging a small prog will finish emerging it before xorg is downloaded.
Anyway, that may help a bit. |
