Hi.

Ive just finished installing gentoo!! It boots and i can log in, to what i think is the shell prompt?

Im a n000b and have only used knoppix before.

I would like to install gnome 2.6 as my GUI. Along with any gnome fundemental packages, and anything else you think i might need.

I know its a big ask.

Thanks.

Check out the desktop handbook guide. You'll also want this one if you plan on using X.Org (which you should) You'll also want the alsa sound config guide.

Yes, but it will be automatically installed if you just emerge gnome.
You'll have to set it up of course before you can use it as described in the gentoo desktop guide.

Have fun! :D

Either XFree86 or X.Org (X.Org is reccomended since XFree is going to be phased out by Gentoo) is required as it is the "server" that allows some sort of desktop manager or desktop environment (which Gnome is).

So yeah, you need one of the two.
