Hallo everyone!
I had some strange problems trying to update my kernel to a version 2.6.7-*, I'using kde 3.2.3 having arts enabled, as this is the only way I know getting my VIA 82C686A/B, 8233 South Bridge Soundcard to work without crapy sound.. The solution for that is fixing the samplingrate to 48000Hz, witch is as fare as I know only possible using arts. When I had a short look on the 2.6.7 Changelog I was really looking foreward, cause the was a lot done on the alsa integration, but when I first started kde after compiling the new kernel (alsa compiled in the kernel not as a module), sound came with a integrated reverb effect and not button to switch it off.. That was kind of dissappointing, as I had to go back to kernel 2.6.6; witch is not to bad as mostly everything is working quite fine, but if there isn't a solution I wouldn't be able to update to further kernel versions, if there is nothing done on the alsa-via-sound.. Even though I still have the scrathy sound running programms not using arts (example is UnrealTounement), I was really glad seeing that there is a arts-plugin for XMMS though! So if anybody knows a way to get a via card working probably without arts it would be really heldfull! Best way would be of course to get a god workiing "stand-alone" alsa support for this card (or is there a way to get that work I don't know?) in further kernel-updates.. It's a shame that my knowledge of hardware-programming is by fare to bad to have a look on it myself. Thanks for any ideas, thanks for this great forum and esspecialy thanks to the people developing gentoo! This a great OS |
