|
|
I followed the document on the gentoo site for emerging and configuring xorg, but I am unable to get the gui up and running.
It appears to be a problem with my monitor settings. Sometimes when I run Xorg -config /root/xorg.conf.new it gives me an error saying no screens and mentioning something about a parsing error on line 50 of the monitors section where the vertrefresh rate needs to be a number or a range.
So I go in to the file and loko and it is set to 50.0-0.0
I am assuming that this is the problem and I have been scouring the net everywhere trying to find what the correct settings for my monitor (compaq s7500) are. I change those settings around a bit and then when i run xorg -config /root/xorg.conf.new it goes to a black screen for like a second and then shoots me into a black and white patterned gui screen (looks like a grey screen at high resolutions) with my cursor on it in the shape of an X. I can move my mouse, but the background looks a little funny and nothing else ever loads it just sits on that one screen.....
any ideas?

hmmm
despite these problems and despite the fact that when i run
Xorg -config /etc/X11/xorg.conf it hangs as mentioned above startx actually seems to work and puts me into a gui with a few terminal windows open
when I type exit in one of those terminal windows however it goes to a black screen and hangs.......
