can't emerge kde...

Emerge KDE hangs with "traceback" error.

My search through the forum made it clear that others have experienced the same problem, but for the life of me I can't understand/decipher the answers that have been given.

I'm using a Gentoo 1.2 ISO, stage3 tarball. I emerge'd rsync before kernel compilation. After coming to a screeching halt the first time, I emerged update world. That didn't work. I emerged X11 with no problem, tried KDE again. No luck. I tried Gnome. Unh, unh. Searched forums, rebooted unmerged postgresql (someone's solution somewhere in the forum), but package wasn't found. Back to the forums... etc.

emerge kde stops at freetype 2.1.2
