i just tried to set up a network printer through cups and it can see it at localhost:631 and everything seems to work fine, but regardless of whether i print from a program like openoffice or command line it will only print on the top quarter of the page and squish everything in there really small. I've looked around a lot and haven't been able to find similar problems to this, can anyone help? printer is a hp color laserjet 4500.

also, when i try to print pdf's i get a page printed out with the following message:
Code:

PCL XL error
     Subsystem:     TEXT
     Error:              IllegalBitmapResolutionSegment
     Operator:        ReadFontHeader
     Position:          9

I don't know much about setting up the printers in gentoo, so any help is greatly appreciated... thanks!

Code:
emerge hpijs

delete the printer and recreate it using the new driver provided by hpijs.

thanks... thought i had tried that... but i guess doing it for a third time i did something i had been forgetting before...

also... in the http://localhost:631/printers thing it keeps automatically recognizing other printers that it does not set up correctly and sets them as the default... how can i override these settings to make the one that i properly configured the default?

thanks again
