|
|
I would like to know if a package has a dependency say Qt2 and I have Qt3 installed...does that mean
1. I don't have to install the dependency or
2. It will only work by installing Qt2?
also can anyone tell me whats the best way to uninstall all the old packages and somehow emerge --update world and fix all the dependencies again? so i can just run that over 1 night or something... _________________ "I am a wanderer, It's time for me to wander again" |

Depends on the package.
You have to install Qt2 to have the Qt2 apps working. But for most libs, you just need greater than a certain version.
There are always milestones which break backwards-compatability, though.
The easiest way to uninstall all old packages is "emerge --clean world". But apparently some stuff can still break.
Do "emerge --clean world; emerge --update world", go to bed... and keep your fingers crossed!
Or this post shows another way you might do it: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=1728&highlight=build+options&sid=5ae854091e6136947a0ae8829c4c83f2 |

is that the same as if i run pkg-clean and remove all the older ebuild packages?
btw, i don't think its worth the trouble since i only saved about 10 or 20 megs of space after uninstall all the old ebuild packages....i thought i was actually removing the old package...but later on i found out its only ebuild files ..... _________________ "I am a wanderer, It's time for me to wander again" |

Cool, I didn't know about pkg-clean (makes a note)
Nope, "emerge --clean world" removes the actual packages, not the ebuilds. |

--pretend doesn't seem to work in conjunction with --update or --clean, don't ask me why.
It's kind of a leap into the dark |
