Rdeeman,
What about smbmount?
can't mount -t smbfs without smbmount and mount.smbfs -> /wherever/smbmount

Redeeman,
If we already have a working reiser4 system, based on your previous work, can we just update libaal and reiser4progs, and build the new Redeeman kernel afterwords, and be at the same point we would be at if we did a completely new install using the new live-cd? Or, it is going to be necessary to do a completely new reiser4 install? In my case, I have reiser4 on /, /home, /var, and /data. /boot is ext3.

I did my current resier4 install on dialup, and had to download a lot of stuff with knoppix onto a spare reiser3 /data partition, then copy it to my reiser4 /. I notice there is ppp on the new live cd, but no wvdial.

Could someone give me a brief rundown on how to setup ppp/wget using the new live-cd on a fresh install, as I'd like to install from it on another box. I've never been able to get ppp to work with my ISP, except with wvdial or kppp.

Thanks much for the reiser4 work!

I can't seem to patch 2.6.7-mm2 with the new Redeeman4. I've followed exactly the same procedure, tried other -p options, bz2 or extracted. Before, the -p4 option worked. I'm assuming this patch is meant to be applied to 2.6.7-mm2, right after you apply the mm2 patch.

I apply the 2.6.7-mm2 patch (mm2 works fine on my other boxes), then it fails when applying the Redeeman4 patch. I've patched kernels many hundreds of times, including Redeeman reiser4 kernels, and can't figure out what's wrong, other than the patch is missing headers. I've upgraded libaal and reiser4progs to the latest versions.

In the "notes" at the Redeeman webpage, it says:

TO FIX ERRORS:
cd include
rm -fr asm
ln -s asm-i386 asm
cd ..

There is no /include/asm, either after I extract 2.6.7 vanilla, apply the mm2 patch, or try to apply the Redeeman4 patch, so what is "rm -fr asm" referring to?

Below, are a few of the errors I've gotten- never had this happen before on the Redeeman kernels. What am I doing wrong?

first you apply mm2, then you apply redeeman4, now with -p3 :>

i will tell which patch level to use in the notes from now on :>

and yes, you must remove the asm dir, and do what the page says..

good night from here

Thanks Redeeman,
I'll give it another try, but I still don't get the /include/asm deal- there is no such directory, at least so far- but I haven't successfully applied the Redeeman4 patch yet, so I hope it shows up.

That would be a good idea- mentioning what patch level to use, if it has changed.

2)i plan on installin the livecd tomorrow and i wanted to know what do i use for a stage? does it alrdy have a stage1 tarball on it? and if not, which should i use?

thnx!! :D

btw, great work dude!

OK! The -p3 patch level solved all my problems! 2.6.7-mm2-Redeeman4 compiled without a hitch, and is working really great so far.

One question:
On the LWN kernel patch page, for nicks np1 patch, which I understand is included as part of Redeeman4, it says:

Make sure to give X a priority of about -10 for best results.

renice -10 `pidof X`
----------------------------------------------------------------

I was wondering if we Redeeman4 users should be doing that too? Top reports x is niced at 0, I guess by default. Anyone tried -10 and come to any conclusions? Guess I'll give it a shot.

some people sleep while you're awake, your posts were only 1.5 hours old!

1) afaik redeeman's sources are based on mm-sources (which is a patch for vanilla-sources), but have a few extra patches included (including reiser4 etc) similar to love-sources.

2) afaik there is no stage tarball on the livecd - u need to download it from the regular mirror (2004.1 stage1 or whichever u want)

1. Redeeman4 is a patch to the 2.6.7-mm2 kernel. So you must first get the 2.6.7 kernel, extract it, and patch it wth the 2.6.7-mm2 patch, and then patch that with the 2.6.7-Redeeman4 patch.

What I do is this:

1. Extract linux-2.6.7.bz2 vanilla kernel, either in /usr/src, or my own /home/wrc/kern directory. (You can compile as user, then su to do make modules_install, mount /boot, and copy the bzImage.) If you're doing this the first time during install, just do it in /usr/src, as root to keep it simple)

2. Place 2.6.7-mm2.bz2 inside the linux-2.6.7 directory, cd to that directory, and issue:

bunzip2 -dc 2.6.7-mm2.bz2 | patch -p1

4. After it applies, place the 2.6.7-Redeeman4.patch.bz2 inside the linux-2.6.7 directory. and issue:

bunzip2 -dc 2.6.7-Redeeman4.patch.bz2 | patch -p3

(You could alternatively extract the reedeman patch there, and do:

patch -p3 < 2.6.7-Redeeman4.patch)

5. Then do make mrproper

6. Then you have to follow the notes Redeeman has written, and do:

cd /linux-2.6.7/include
rm -fr asm
ln -s asm-i386 asm
cd back to linux-2.6.7

Then you can do make menuconfig, make bzImage, make modules, make modules_install, and copy the new kernel to /boot- in other words, after patching, you do a regular kernel compile, with a good config file for your hardware.
------------------------------------------------
Question 2:
I don't think the Redeeman live-cd has any stages on it to extract like the regular Gentoo live-cd (possibly a stage 1?), so it takes a little planning to get this working. I had to do it on dialup, download stuff to a spare reiser3 partition with a Knoppix cd, but if you have dsl or cable, it will be easier, as I think you can just pick up the normal install doc after getting your networking up from the Redeeman cd.

Hope this helps, as my install methods are a little weird, and I've never done a "normal" install on dsl/cable.

or u should be able to emerge sys-kernel/mm-sources-2.6.7-r2 and then just patch to redeeman with

Code:
bunzip2 -dc 2.6.7-Redeeman4.patch.bz2 | patch -p3

as written above..

the questions about redeeman-sources:
its a patch. (and wrc1944 did the correct thing with applying)

question about livecd:
true, no stages on it, you need to download them from a gentoo mirror

renice X:
yes, i suggest renice X to -15 though.

For anyone interested, I just compiled the latest reiser4 snapshot on a 2.6.7-mm2 kernel, no problems.

reiser4-2004.06.25-19.36-linux-2.6.7-mm2.diff.gz

found at:
http://namesys.com/auto-snapshots/

I didn't need to do the rm -fr asm deal (as asm wasn't there anyway), and I don't know what the differences are from Redeeman's June-23 version. It is 6kb smaller- guess they came up with some fixes of some kind.

DAMN! Just checked their site again, and there's a new one for June-28! However, nothing about it is in the changelog dated 6-28. Surely this thing is almost ready for a final release.

BTW, I've tried renicing x to -10, and -15, and I can't really tell any difference from nice=0. Maybe I don't run my systems in a manner that it would make a difference. I know the x PID changes at boot, but is there any way to have the x niceness default to -15 at boot, without having to do an su, and type it in manually? I recall that somehow, Mandrake used to default to x niceness of -10, or -20. Must be some config init file- I'll look around.

Thanks Redeeman,

I guess this explains why Con Kolivas recommends not renicing, and just using 0. I think he's been saying that since the first 2.6 kernels, or even before that. I've been a user of his kernels since my Mandrake days, and 2.4 kernels, and always thought they performed very well on my boxes. I've recently been using the CFQ scheduler, which is his default, and doesn't mm now default to CFQ?

So -if I understand correctly, Redeeman kernels are currently using nicksched, and if I boot with them, renicing will help (depending on my computer usage), but not if I'm using another kernel without nicksched, and in that case, I shouldn't renice. And, this holds true with whatever file system one is using.

Is this correct?

you are misunderstanding a thing, nicksched is a process scheduler, CFQ is IO scheduler...

the IO scheduler schedules the io access... (CFQ)

where the process scheduler schedules the ressources the processes should have (nicksched).

if you use nicksched, you should renice X to -15, independent of what IO scheduler you use.

Thanks for the clarification, Redeeman!

I'll repeat one other question, since nobody has responded to it yet.

I'm on dialup, and installing Gentoo has always been an ordeal, as even though the live cd's have ppp on them, I have never been able to just pop in a Gentoo cd, and setup a dialup connection off the cd. I've always had to use another distro, or a knoppix cd to download wvdial and ppp, and only after I extract a stage2 or 3, that creates /etc/ppp/ and all the files there, can I get wvdial/ppp to work.

In other words, I can't figure out how to get a dialup connection going from only the live cd, whereas it seems pretty simple if you have dsl/cable. And with the Redeeman cd, there are no stages to extract, so I had to copy a stage & portage tree from the standard 2004.1 cd to a reiser3 partition, and then copy that stuff to reiser4. (IIRC, I did use Knoppix to get the latest portage tree snapshot). Anyway, it still wasn't totally functional, but at least I could get wvdial/ppp up, and begin emerging needed stuff. That eventually worked for a reiser4 install, but took forever.

I guess my question is:
Can anyone give me a clear explanation of how a ppp connection is done off the live cd, without having to jump through all the hoops with knoppix, other partitions, and/or other distros?

I only have one cdrom on each of my boxes. What I'd like to be able to figure out is how to pop in a Gentoo live-cd, setup ppp, and do a stage1 install, just like somebody with dsl/cable can. I must be missing something, or can't this even be done?

It's even more of a chore trying to do a reiser4 install, as knoppix or all other live-cds I've investigated (and I've looked hard for one) can't mount, read, or write to reiser4 partitions. I've had to manipulate/copy packages from my spare reiser3 partition, which with dialup and hundreds of packages, quickly becomes a nightmare. If Knoppix or another live-cd with dialup connection support had reiser4 support, I'd be all set, but AFAIK, there isn't one existing, as yet- unless I'm missing something obvious about the Redeeman cd. Any help out there?

Thanks,
wrc1944

Can anyone give me a clear explanation of how a ppp connection is done off the live cd, without having to jump through all the hoops with knoppix, other partitions, and/or other distros?

You can do it with pppd alone, but it can be a bit of a pain. If you have existing config files created with wvdial/kppp or whatever you could use them instead of creating them yourself. The way to do it is to create two files: one has the options to pass to pppd, the other is a series of commands for chat, which sends and receives to/from the modem. The first file just lists pppd options, 1 per line, like this:
Code:
/dev/ttyS0
115200
user "foo"
defaultroute
noauth
noipdefault
modem
crtscts
mtu 1500
mru 1500
connect '/usr/sbin/chat -v -f /etc/ppp/peers/yourISP_chat'

Call this file /etc/ppp/peers/yourISP. The options are all described in "man pppd".

The second file is the one that's mentioned as a parameter to the "connect" option. According to the manpage, the commands in this file should prepare the device so that the PPP protocol can be used, which in the case of a modem means initialising and dialing up. The chat commands can be a bit trickier to handle - the one I'm using is a copy of one created by a ppp dockapp. It's not too hard to understand:
Code:
ABORT "NO CARRIER"
ABORT "NO DIALTONE"
ABORT "BUSY"
ABORT "ERROR"
ABORT "NO ANSWER"
ABORT "Username/Password Incorrect"
ABORT "Authentication Failure"
ABORT "Bad password"
ABORT "Bad Password"
REPORT CONNECT
"" "AT"
OK "ATZ"
OK "ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0"
OK "ATDTphonenumberhere"
"ogin:" "username"
"word:" "password"
"otocol:" ppp"

Put this in /etc/ppp/peers (remember to give it the same name as used in the previous file). The ABORT lines mean: "if chat receives the string in quotes from the modem, abort the connection attempt". The REPORT lines mean that if it receives the string after REPORT, it should display anything following that up to the next control character. With CONNECT, that usually includes the connection speed. The remaining lines are typical chat commands: expect the string on the left, send the string on the right. So it starts by sending the standard "AT" to the modem, waits for an "OK", then sends "ATZ", waits for "OK" again, sends some more init options (copied from wvdialconf output), waits for "OK" once more, then starts dialing. After that, it does the login procedure, which may differ slightly between ISPs.

Once you've got those two files created, you should be able to connect with
Code:
pppd call yourISP
The only other thing you might need to do is edit /etc/resolv.conf and add your ISPs nameserver. I've just tried all of this on Redeemans LiveCD (I'm on 56k too :() and it worked fine from there.

ok, i need a kernel or how to patch one.

xx-sources fails on manual config and in genkernel.
redeeman sources can't be downloaded and is thus out.
love-sources still is only at 2.6.7_rc3, i haven't tried this yet.

mm sources and other sources don't have reiser4 support which i need for /tmp and /var.

anyone have any ideas. i have a kernel panic thread in the kernel section detailing my attempts at getting xx-sources to work and having it fail. in short genkernel and disabling APCI both failed.

Thanks much Wedge_,
I'll give it a try- sounds like it will work fine.

thechris,

You can patch the vanilla 2.6.7 with mm2, and then patch that with the latest reiser4 patch from namesys (or Redeeman4), as I described above- worked fine for me. Also, first update reiser4progs and libaal with emerge. If you need more details, post back.
