Hi folks.
What I am dieing to have, is a simple little script or utility that I can setup as a nightly cron job that will backup things like /etc, the dot files in my home directory, and anything else I need, to a backup directory on another mounted partition on my system.
I've looked all over the web and all I can find are things that backup to a tape drive, or burn to a CD and the like. I just want it to make a big tar.gz or something with the date in the filename for example.
My own scripting ability is somewhere between non-existant and beginner so I cannot (yet) create one myself, however I do feel somewhat comfortable with minor editing like adding my own dir's / partitions to an already established script.
I know there must be plenty of these in existance and my googling skillz are subpar or something... I find it hard to believe that there are no other users that want something like this. If any of you use a script or utility like this, could you please post it here or tell me about one elsewhere?
Thank you,
Arker. |

Just so happens I was working on my backup system scripts today too!
Take a peek @ http://www.mikerubel.org/computers/rsync_snapshots/
I suggest you read that. If you are interested, I can share with you the one I use on my servers, but I didn't document mine, so you'll have to read through it to figure out what it does. It is based on what I read at the above link. _________________ - Kyle Manna

Also, there are several other threads asking about backups.
Going to move this to the Duplicate Threads forum. _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |
