It's hard to believe that Gentoo is still stuck on 1.0.4496 as stable...it feels like nearly a year.
Anyway, the dilemma is probably a common one: I want to enjoy all the excitement of the 2.6 series, but unfortunately I'm on a GeForce4 Ti 4200 card, and I know that there's a fatal bug in the 1.0.4496 drivers that makes it incompatible with 2.6. Is there any way to currently get around this?
Many thanks in advance. |

Just emerge the newer drivers with:
Code: | ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge nvidia-glx nvidia-kernel |
Make sure X is killed and the nvidia module is unloaded. Go to another terminal (Ctrl-Alt-F#) and log in as root. Then, do:
Code: | /etc/init.d/xdm stop
modprobe -r nvidia
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge nvidia-glx nvidia-kernel
modules-update |
Everything should work fine after that with 2.6. You will also notice a huge speed increasement. _________________ I was a Gangster for Capitalism, by Major General Smedley Butler.

I'm pretty wary of unstable packages, and as of yet I have never done so...it just puzzles me how it can take nearly a year to stabilize such a common package, yet gentoo-dev-sources has had six stable re-releases within a week. |

I'm not sure how much to put in whether packages are marked as stable or not. While I generally use stable versions whenever possible, there are a few of the "stable" packages that just don't work at all, at least on the configurations I've used. (vlc 0.6.2 and nvidia 4436 comes to mind...)
Anyway, in my experience the newer "unstable" nvidia drivers are far more stable than the stable ati-drivers ever were, so the stability is relative I guess.
I'm using them right now with a MSI GeForce 4 Ti4800SE, and I've been playing Quake 3, Team Arena and UT with no problems at all so far. Excellent performance (as opposed to ati) and no glitches or lockups (once again, as opposed to ati. try letting xscreensaver run for a while on ati-drivers ) |

I guess I'll make an exception. |

Wouldn't
Code: | ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge nvidia-glx |
do the same thing, since nvidia-kernel is a dependency of nvidia-glx, and portage would want to get the ~x86 version of nvidia-kernel before emerging the ~x86 version of nvidia-glx? I might be wrong, since I'm still a n00b with Linux. But doing that won't hurt. _________________ Dentists are evil. |

Actually, I've had better experiences and less crashes with the newer 'unstable' than I did with the old stable one. _________________ I was a Gangster for Capitalism, by Major General Smedley Butler.

Does this newer driver not break with "4K stacks" compiled in the kernel? |

Until a NEW nVidia driver comes out (e.g: none of the ones currently avaliable), then no, 4k Stacks is not an option. _________________ I was a Gangster for Capitalism, by Major General Smedley Butler.

Even with 4K stacks disabled, will the older driver not work at all with 2.6? |

Forget the old drivers , I have the same Geforce running on 2.6.6-love4 kernel perfect since they came out. xorg , nptl , the lot. Perfectly stable since 9th June.
Code: | Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild N ] media-video/nvidia-kernel-1.0.5336-r4
bash-2.05b# uname -a
Linux linbox 2.6.6-love4 #9 Wed Jun 9 22:29:51 CEST 2004 i686 AMD Athlon(tm) processor AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux
bash-2.05b# |
I o/c my AthlonXP2000+ to 2800+ speeds and get fps like:
Code: | glxgears
18060 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3612.000 FPS
18924 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3784.800 FPS
18931 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3786.200 FPS
18951 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3790.200 FPS
18919 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3783.800 FPS
18950 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3790.000 FPS
|
That should entice you stop fiddling with the old drivers and see what you can get from your gx card on a good linux kernel.
