|
|
I tried to install gentoo 1.2 on my old file server, it's a P 166 with 50 meg of RAM. My CD is an i686 optimized version so I couldn't do stage2 or 3 so I tried building from a stage1. However, when I tried to boostrap it would go for 1 to 1.5 hours and then seg fault and after that if I try to run any commands it kernel panics. I tried my make config with both -arch= i586 and -mcpu= i586 (those aren't the exact lines but I can't remember the exact ones, it's a general idea of what I tried though) Anyone know why this might be? Could it just be my CD has errors on it? Thanks. |

My first instinct would be to try swapping the RAM. _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

Well, I went and grabbed the 1.4rc1 Live CD and am building it from stage1. So far it has bootstrapped just fine and is now emerging system. So I assume that the stage1 tarball on my other CD is just corrupt.
On a side note, I would not recomend installing gentoo from stage1 on a P166 unless you are either a masochist or posess inhuman patience, bootstapping took between 4 and 5 hours...so I'm going to go to bed while it emerges system |

same problem here...
emerge gettext-0.11.5 segfaults al the time, using a pentium-overdrive 200MMX. Being a masochist, i like to see how ugly a system can be to not be able to install a new linux distro, but gentoo really stresses cpu and mem to ohard to try on a lot of them. I think a lot of segfaults are being caused by a too high temperature on the cpu.
Now i'll try to work around it by modding the /usr/portage/scripts/boostrap.sh script and see if i can emerge the packages individually, gives this old machine more time to cool down in between. |
