1.) What is the difference between nvidia driver "nv" and "nvidia" (setup via XF86Config).
2.) After kernel upgrade from kernel -version-r1 to let say kernel-verison-r2 when my driver is set to "nv" the X boots normally but when I have it set to "nvidia" and I upgrade the kernel the X usually will not start.
I usually fix it by Quote: | emerge nvidia-kernel
emerge nvidia-glx
opengl-update nvidia |
Do I have to follow this sequence or "opengl-update nvidia" alone would do it?

1. nv is X's own nVidia driver, it's 2D only, nvidia is the driver from nVidia themselves which supports 3D as well.
2. Whenever you upgrade your kernel to a new version, the modules for it are placed in a new dir (/lib/modules/<kernelversion>). For the new kernel to find your nvidia driver modules, you have to re-emerge them, so you can't skip that step. You can skip the opengl-update bit though. |

Joseph_sys,
nv is the open source nVidia driver shipped with xfree and xorg.
nvidia is the closed source driver provided by nVidia. Its faster than nv. nVidia have the benefit of designing the chip and have the datasheet.
Every time you upgrade your kernel you need to Code: | emerge nvidia-kernel | since the binary kernel module has some open source glue logic that builds against the specific kernel version.
You only need update nvidia-glx if you are also moving to a new version of the nvidia drivers. The two parts need to be the same version. They check. _________________ Regards,

Thank you for the explanation.
Next time I'll shop for a card that provides full specification to Linux community.
