Well I was planning on cloning my laptop install to a desktop system with these specs:
Celeron 900
MSI GF 420 MX AGP 64MB ( http://www.kuku.cz/Obrazky/Fotky/Velke/GeForce4%20MX%20420%20MSI%20800.jpg )
Soyo SY 7VCA (Via Apollo Pro 133a) http://www.soyo.com.tw/products/proddesc.php?id=17
So I enabled NVidia frame buffer support, VIA AGP, VIA IDE in the kernel.
Grub comes up and I hit enter and the screen flickers a few times and I'm left with a flashing cursor in the corner of the screen. But I can hear the hard drive going like it is booting.
So I pulled the card out and put in a Radeon 7000 and the display works.
Gentoo-dev-sources 2.6.7
I have never tried using an Nvidia card with Linux before (aside from a time I used Vesa FB to get a p4 laptop to work with X on RH 6.2) and I thought I saw a post recently on something similar to this but I can't find it.

Don't use the NVidia framebuffer -- stick to the VESA framebuffer. AFAIK, the MX420 is a GeForce4, not a GeForce (which is what the kernel's "nVidia Riva support" framebuffer option says it's for...)
Better yet, try removing all of the framebuffer options, and see if that works for you. If it does, try the VESA framebuffer driver, and you should be rockin'. |

One of the reasons I tried the Nvidia framebuffer is that the VESA framebuffer on the Knoppix CD doesn't understand the TV out port and I was hoping to have this thing use a TV full time. _________________ Inspiron 4100 & Sun UltraAXe
