Im having alot of trouble getting a network setup during installation. Im installing with the livecd 2004.0 since i have been reading alot of problems with the 2004.1 network detection. Well it's kinda weird because when i type

Code:
ifconfig eth0

it seems detect the eth0 but i can't ping anyone.

Code:
ping: unknown host www.google.com

I tried running

Code:
modprobe 8138too
net-setup eth0

Code:
bcm5700: eth0 NIC Link is DOWN
Type "ifconfig" to make sure the interface was configured correctly.

and still i get no luck.

When the livecd boots it says it detects my network with dhcp. So then i tried

Code:
dhcpcd eth0

and the error i got was:

Code:
bcm5700: eth0 NIC Link is DOWN
Type "ifconfig" to make sure the interface was configured correctly.

When i type ifconfig all i get if the lo showing up running correctly and not the eth0 unless i do of course ifconfig eth0.

Does anyone know the problem? I have read the Sticky thread witht the 2004.1 network detection problems and this is why im using the 2004.0 livecd. But it still doesn't work for me :(

Follow the instructions under the section "using ifconfig and route" in:
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?part=1&chap=3#doc_chap4
and see if that works

What type of NIC are you using? Are you sure you are loading the correct module?

Code:
lspci
will tell you what cards you have installed. Look for the network card an post up what type it is.

Your loading a module for a RealTek 8138 card, you need to find the module for the Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5788 Gigabit Ethernet card. The RealTek card is not a gigabit NIC, therefore it will not work. If someone else doesn't post the module name I'll try to post it if I find it.

I don't kow if this one will work or if it's included in the Gentoo LiveCD, but someone on the net used the bcm5700 module. You could try it out.
