On the livecd 2004.1 for example the nic realtek 8029 is not autodetected by the gentoo kernel. You can either: - boot with the smp-nofb kernel, which does somhow detect it. - if you try to modprobe ne2k-pci and you get unresolved's try loading 8390 first, then again modprobe ne2k-pci, and it should be loaded.
