Personally I like the service that zoneedit gave me.

They have a script that u can make also thats simple
just type wget and some other syntax and put that on a cronjob and it will update your ip however often you want with just wget.

You need the "custom=yes" option for a CustomDNS service:
Code:
##
## dyndns.org dynamic addresses
##
## (supports variables: wildcard,mx,backupmx)
##
custom=yes \
server=members.dyndns.org, \
protocol=dyndns2 \
n7down.ath.cx

I've found that use=web works better than use=if, give it a try.

I use dyndnsupdate. Never had a problem. One thing you need to be careful with is dyndnsupdate won't send an update if your IP hasn't changed. If you don't update the IP within a certain period of time, dyndns.org will drop the registration. Found this out the hard way last weekend. You can force dyndnsupdate to send the request any way.

yes, you have to be connected directly to the internet. For a host behind a router, having only an IP from the range reserved for a local network (192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x, forgot the 3rd group) it won't work.

Rav
