I recently, emerge sync; emerge -u system; emerge -u world; etc-update;
Before I updated, xscreensaver worked just the way I wanted. Afterwards, xaos stopped working (just get a blank screen) and I can no longer read the xscreensaver documentation from within the xscreensaver-demo gui app. 
How can I get this working again? Where do I even start? I have no idea what xscreensaver settings changed when I updated my system. There weren't any screensaver configs updated when I etc-update. When I look at the command to run xaos in xscreensaver-demo it all looks the same to me... but it's been months since I got it working so I'm not sure if it really stayed the same or not. | Code: | xaos -root -root -autopilot -nogui -delay 10000 -maxframerate 30 -incoloring -1 -outcoloring -1

The above command is what xaos was set to after the update. I just tried removing one of the root flags and now I get a blank screen with the following error message | Code: | | xscreensaver: <time>: unblanked B: brk grew by 4K. |
The only answered post I could find asking about this error is here where the user was told to read the source if he wanted to know what it meant.

The only logs for xaos are dated from before I got it working in the first place

I'm lost and have no idea what to do to fix my problem. I appreciate any help or advice.

Hmm... xscreensaver now contains control sliders for some screen savers that, if you use them, break that saver.
Case in point, Squiral. Squiral used to have a "density" flag and a corresponding slider. The slider's still there but if I adjust it and try to preview I get | Code: | Squiral: from the XScreenSaver 4.15 distribution (26-Feb-2004.)

Unrecognised option: -density
Options include: -root, -window, -mono, -install, -noinstall, -visual <arg>, -window-id <arg>, -fill <arg> .... |
Presumably the density slider should set the fill flag.
*sigh* How can these kind of basic mistakes make it into STABLE release code? This is really pathatic.
Of course it could be something I've done. But honestly... it was working before I updated system and world and I didn't have any config files for xscreensaver when I etc-update.
