is there a way to export my user list and passwords to a different computer and a new install

Can't you just copy /etc/group, /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow to the new machine?

This assumes that your target system is of the same type. If they are not you better only copy non-system users and groups with UID/GID >= 100 on some systems even >=500 Alex!!!
