Tar, cpio, mondo, amanda, dump, Kdat .....
I just use tar. It is very flexible, spans nicely and is easily scripted and cronned.

If you are looking at many hosts I recommend bacula. Very configurable, multiple tape drives spread over multiple machines, backs up Win95-XP, MacOS X and anything that looks even remotely like UN*X, supports tape/dvd robots and can even print labels. It's not that easy to set up though - I'd think hard before using it with less than ~10 machines. |
